Updated Recommendations from Franklin County Public Health
July 29, 2020
Dear New Albany Families,
Yesterday, in my update, I shared that updated guidance and recommendations regarding the 2020-21 school year would be coming from the Franklin County Public Health Commissioner, Joseph Mazzola. I received this letter this afternoon and it may be found here. I am providing it to you for your information.
As shared yesterday, we will actively review the recommendations provided and discuss them with local health officials from our New Albany COVID-19 Taskforce. We will also analyze the recommendations with Board Counsel in order to provide updates and discuss them at our Board of Education meeting next Monday, August 3, 2020 at 6:00 pm.
In addition to a remote learning recommendation, the letter includes a recommendation to discontinue extra-curricular activities such as athletics, band, and other activities on page two. Out of an abundance of caution and necessity to actively consider the recommendations provided, I am suspending all skills training sessions for middle and high school students beginning tomorrow, Thursday, July 30, 2020, for all NAPLS athletic, band, and other extracurricular activities.
Tentatively, pending additional information learned, we will restart skills training for fall sports, band, and other authorized extracurricular activities on Tuesday, August 4, 2020 under Phase 1 guidelines unless otherwise determined in the coming days. Phase 1 guidelines include groups of 9 students per 1 coach/advisor for authorized fall sports/activities only. Skill training for winter and spring sport athletes will not be permitted to participate until further notice. For your reference, NAPLS phase guidelines for participation used this summer may be found here. Additionally, all fall athletic competitions, inter school scrimmages and contests, are also suspended until further notice.
Our fall coaches and activity sponsors will begin work on reorganizing for the anticipated restart of Phase 1 skill training tentatively scheduled for August 4, 2020. We are actively working with local and state health and government officials and the Ohio High School Athletic Association to share updates as soon as additional information is available and confirmed. I thank you for your continued patience as we navigate the ever-changing information provided to our schools.
Should you have any questions directly related to athletic, band, or other extracurricular activities, please contact your coach, advisor, athletic director or building principal directly.
