First graders will be planting winter crops the months of November, December and January. To gain a better understanding of how plants grow and how solar energy can help plants grow even in the heart of winter, students are planting lettuce, spinach, onions and radishes. These cold resistant plants should do well in their cold frame gardens which were constructed with the help of the school district’s maintenance department. The gardens are fully enclosed and they have a clear surface, or lid, on them. The clear lid is slanted at a forty-five degree angle and faces south so it can best absorb and capture the sun’s rays for increase the garden’s temperature. The students in these pictures are the first to plant this year and are from Ms. Wanless’s class.
