Congratulations to our Salutatorian, Arshiya Ahsan
Principal Kraemer, the high school leadership team and high school counselors shared the news that Arshiya is the Salutatorian for the Class of 2021 at New Albany High School. We asked her what she thought of the honor and share her responses below.
What does it mean to you to be selected Salutatorian? I am incredibly honored to have been named as Salutatorian; I have worked really hard all throughout high school and this is a very lovely recognition of my dedication towards learning. This award is an affirmation of the effort I have put into my schoolwork and a testimony of what I am capable of achieving. Receiving this honor has just further motivated me to continue to put forth my best effort into everything I do.
What do you consider to be the "secret to your success" and this achievement? My success and attaining this achievement would not have been possible without my parents or my faith. My parents have taught me the importance of persistence, dedication, and hard work. They have raised me with the proverb, “Always shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land amongst the stars”. This principle helped me realize that I need to dream big to achieve big. Without these values I would not have been able to come this far. My parents have supported me every step of the way and have always been my biggest cheerleaders. My parents deserve this recognition more than I do- I can never thank them enough for all they have done for me. Additionally, there have been many times throughout high school when unexpected challenges arose. Instead of getting discouraged, I remind myself of a lesson from the Holy Quran: “Verily with every difficulty comes ease and with every hardship there is relief” (94:5). This mindset motivates me to remain positive and persevering.
What would you say has been the most helpful thing during your high school career to get you to this level? I am very grateful for the supportive New Albany community that I grew up with. To all my teachers, mentors, family, and friends, you have all been instrumental in my academic achievements. Thank you for always encouraging me to be the best version of myself. I could not have gotten to this level without any of you and I will remain forever grateful for all you have done for me.
How many years have you attended New Albany Schools? I have been attending New Albany Schools since kindergarten- for 13 years. It has been an incredibly amazing and rewarding journey thus far and it is very bittersweet to almost be at the finish line.
What colleges or universities are you considering? I am currently deciding between three colleges: Drexel University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and George Washington University.
What would you like to pursue as a major, career, etc. I am relatively undecided on a major but am considering majoring in psychobiology and pursuing medicine. However, with whatever path I decide to take in the future, I know that my ultimate goal is to dedicate myself to making the world a better place. It is very important for me to “be the change [I] want to see in the world”-Mahatma Gandhi.
What sort of activities are you involved with at NAHS or in the community? At NAHS, I have been involved with Student Council, National Honors Society, GirlUp! Club, and The Beyond the Chains Human Trafficking Awareness Showcase and Fashion Show. I also played for the school’s tennis team. Additionally, I founded The NAHS Youth Interfaith Club and serve as president. Moreover, I write articles for the local New Albany community magazine. Outside of school, I volunteer at Riverside Methodist Hospital and have served as team lead, event chair, and treasurer for the MYimpact Youth Committee at Noor Mosque.
Please share anything else you may feel you want people to know! I am so grateful for my family, especially my parents and siblings, teachers, counselor, and the staff at New Albany Schools. Thank you for your constant support and encouragement. You have all contributed so much to the person I am today, and there is no way I could have come this far without you. This honor is as much yours as it is mine, and I will be forever thankful for everything you all have done for me.
