NAHS to Launch Cyber Security Program for Fall 2020

Our world has never been more connected, and the demand for securing our networks has never been greater! Next school year, in partnership with Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools, New Albany High School will launch a CyberSecurity program on campus. Students will learn how to design and build computer networks, and enhance their security skills to explore and prepare for one of the fastest-growing career fields. This two-year program is designed around certifications from industry leaders such as CompTIA and Cisco in preparation for the information technology workforce. New Albany students will also have the opportunity to earn college credits through College Credit Plus by enrolling in this program.

We are enrolling rising juniors for this program (current sophomores), which will consist of four “super electives” that will be showcased on the student’s transcript upon successful completion of the program. This can enhance the student’s college application, especially if they are applying for programs in the information technology field.

What are the top reasons to consider Cyber Security?
A handful of reasons include strong job growth in the industry, variety in day-to-day work, job security, and high wages. Cyber Security is one of the most in-demand careers available today and in the future. There are not enough people to fight cybercrime with nearly three million unfilled cyber security positions around the world. The industry is predicted to grow by 28 percent by 2026, a rate much faster than average.

What are some of the top career pathways available with Cyber Security?
While studying Cyber Security while in high school does not limit your future career pathways, it does give you the opportunity to explore the career field prior to postsecondary training. Some of the top careers associated with this industry include Information Security Analyst, Penetration Tester, Security Architect, IT Security Engineer, Security Systems Administrator, IT Security Consultant, Network Administrator, and Network Analyst.

What is the job outlook and salary prospects with Cyber Security?
According to the Ohio Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are 32,000 current positions in the field, 2,500 current job openings, and the median salary is $89,000 annually.

What does the Cyber Security program look like for a student?
This program is a two-year program for grades 11 and 12. It consists of Honors Weighted Courses. These courses include:

  • Junior Lab:
    • Networking (145035)
    • Routing and Switching (145055)
  • Senior Lab:
    • Network Security (145050)
    • Cybersecurity (146005)

The schedule is a two-period block and the learning experience is designed to help students discover how to protect critical network data through a stair-stepped approach. Students begin by exploring local and wide area network design and implementation in order to gain a baseline understanding of networking. This knowledge will then be used as a framework to which network and cybersecurity concepts will then be applied.

What makes a career-technical program unique?
Career-technical programs have unique requirements and qualities that make them a world-class learning opportunity for students in high school. They must have pathway alignment with the Ohio Department of Education, there must be a business and industry need, they must have an advisory committee and a postsecondary partner. Each career-tech program is affiliated with a Career-Technical Student Organization
(CTSO). Cyber Security students are affiliated with SkillsUSA, which includes leadership camps, conferences, and competitions for more than 345,000 students annually. Students also take Webxams, the required assessment for each course in the program. Finally, care·er-tech program instructors must have industry experience in the field of at least five years.

Can I earn college credits with this program?
This program does offer the opportunity to earn college credits through a postsecondary partnership with Franklin University, which offers an associate's, bachelor's, and master's degree in Cyber Security.

With this partnership with Franklin University, this program is being supported by an institution of higher learning with the National Security Agency (NSA) designation (GAE: Center for Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense). This program will give the opportunity of accepting transfer credits towards Franklin University's Associate and Bachelor's degree in Cyber Security (Network and Routing Switching transfers into Franklin's COMP 204 course, Network Security transfers into Franklin's ITEC 904, Cyber Security is being reviewed for Franklin's ISEC 200). Franklin will also accept College Credit Plus and Advanced Placement courses offered at New Albany toward associate & bachelor's degree.

Are there industry-certified credentials offered in this program?
Yes. The credentials offered include CompTIA Network+ (6 pts), CompTIA Security+ (6 pts). There is also the potential for self-study toward the following industry-recognized credentials:
Cisco Certified Network Associate (12 pts), Cisco CyberOps (No points yet associated), Certified Ethical Hacker (No points associated).

What business partners support this program and how are they involved?
Business partnerships are an important part of a career-technical program. Business partners for Cyber Security include Facebook, Google, Columbus Collaboratory, Buckeye Interactive, Experis IT, and Blacksmith Applications. Business Partners help us in many ways to identify new and emerging careers, advise on curriculum, assessment, work-based learning, facilities and equipment, and assist in providing authentic learning experiences for students.

What characteristics will make a student successful in this program?
While no prior experience in studying Cyber Security is needed, it is helpful. Students should have strong problem-solving and analytical skills, the ability to read and interpret text written at higher levels, and a drive to maintain knowledge of current technologies through independent study. They should also possess confidence and communication skills as well as the ability to operate under pressure and strict deadlines. Students should possess organizational skills, be curious and a team player. Knowledge of computer hardware is helpful.

The online application will be routed to your New Albany High School Counselor. The school counselor will upload your transcript and attendance record to be reviewed by Eastland-Fairfield. Round 1 acceptance letters are mailed mid-March.
