Yearbooks have Arrived!

Yearbooks have arrived!  Yearbooks will be passed out today, to 8th grade students, during Study Center.  If you are in 8th grade and know you purchased a Yearbook online, please check in with your SC teacher and come to the Library .  7th graders will receive their Yearbooks on Friday.

MS Boys Golf

For any 8th graders interested in playing high school boys golf this fall there will be an information meeting on Thursday, May 23 at 6 pm at the high shcool, Room B100. This is for all incoming 9th -12th graders and their parents.

HS Cross Country Meeting

All 8th graders are invited to the High School Cross Country Meeting  today at 7:00 PM, in the middle school cafeteria. Meeting will discuss summer conditioning and strength training, community service, time trial date, team building trip, nutrition, etc.  Go eagles.

Football and Basketball Cheer Clinics and Tryouts

NAMS Football and Basketball Cheer Clinics and Tryouts will be May 20-22 in the Middle School gym from 3:00-4:30 pm. Please see Coach Hacker for tryout forms.

Lady Eagles Drill Team Auditions

Lady Eagles Drill Team auditions are finally here! For the 2019-2020 school year Mrs. Furan will be our new coach and we are looking to grow the program! Come to the informational meeting in the i building band room next Tuesday the 21st after school. We will hold a dance clinic on Saturday from 10-1pm. If you have any questions you can also stop by G104 or email Mrs. Furan.

High School Ice Hockey

Any incoming freshman, if you are interested in high school ice hockey there will be an informational meeting on Wed., May 29 at 7 pm at the Middle School Cafeteria. Both parents and upcoming athletes are welcome to attend.

High School Boys Golf 

For any 8th graders interested in playing high school boys golf this fall there will be an information meeting on Thursday, May 23 at 6 pm in Room B100. This is for all incoming 9th -12th graders and their parents.

NAMS PTO is sponsoring a “Cabin Fever” event on Friday, March 15th. There will be gym games like basketball and volleyball, a dance, and more. 7th graders are invited from 5-7pm, and 8th graders from 8-10pm. Please join us and have a great time hanging out with your friends!

Grading Period Ends - Students, please remember the grading period ends next Friday. 

March 1st is the start of Spring Severe Weather Season. Over the next several months we will to practice tornado and other severe weather drills.  It is important for you to follow all directions given over announcements and by your classroom teacher.  Teachers, please take a moment to remind students of where they will seek safety in the event of a tornado drill. During drills, students should take a protective position.

Valentine’s Day is THIS THURSDAY and it’s time to celebrate all those you love!!

Book Fair 

The book fair is open Monday and Tuesday this week during study center only.  The book fair will also be open Tuesday during parent teacher conferences. You and your parent may visit the book fair even if you don't have a parent teacher conference scheduled.  All students and parents are welcome.

Washington D.C. Class Trip

7th grade students, there is an informational meeting tonight in the MS cafeteria about the Washington DC trip starting at 6:30.

8th Grade Band Students

8th Grade Band students will have sectionals in the middle school today. Mr. Falk’s group will meet in the Orchestra room, and Mr. Coon’s class will meet in the Auxiliary Room.

Press Pause & Get Your Mind Right

This month, our R Factor focus is on Press Pause and Get Your mind Right.  We all have those days when everything seems to come crashing down on us at one time. There’s that moment of panic when our brains hit overload and the only thing we can think is….this is impossible. When this happens, we have to remember two things:

• What’s nearly impossible is being able to make our best decisions or be productive when we’re in total panic mode. So, the first thing we have to do is take a deep breath and then take a minute to regroup.

• Most of the time, we can only do one task at a time. So instead of obsessing over the impossibility of getting everything done…we have to prioritize.

One strategy is to make a list.  Some people like to make their lists with traditional pen and paper, and others use apps on their phones or computers. The most important thing is to start with the most critical tasks, and try to schedule those during the time of day when you are most focused and productive.

Get your tickets for Once on this Island Jr! Held in the Mershad Theatre at the McCoy. Only 110 seats available per show. Pre-sales have been great and we are 50% sold out!  Tickets will be $10 general, $8 students and staff, no refunds or exchanges. Washington D.C. Field Trip 

Reminder to students going on the 8th grade class trip to Washington, DC: This Friday is the final deadline to turn in the Discipline Release Form and Medical Form to Mr. Heselton and make your final payment for the trip online.

ID Badge

Students, on indoor recess day you will not be allowed in the gym without a badge.  You must be wearing it around your neck to have access. If you are not in the gym or outside, you must be in a seat at a table.  Also, please remember it is your responsibility to clean up your own trash. Rise up and own your responsibility to cleanup after yourself.

Tardies

We will begin counting first period tardies TODAY.  Please remember you must be in your classroom by the time the bell rings at 8:00 to be counted on time.  The building doors are now open at 7:35. You can wait inside the building or in the cafeteria. Also remember you are required to wear you lanyard and badge at all times.  Please see Mrs. Godinez if you need to pick-up or order a new badge. The cost for a replacement badge is $6.00.

Congratulations to the 8th grade girls on their 1st place win this weekend in the Dublin Shamrock Girls Lacrosse Tournament.  7th grade girls came home with a second place win.

Students who are fasting for Ramadan and do not want to be in the cafeteria are welcome to go to the library for lunch.

Lost & Found - Students please check the bookshelves in the office and the bins in the hallway for lost and found items. These items will be donated if they are not picked up.

Any student who borrowed a shirt for the Sources of Strength picture, please return it to Mrs. Miller in room 280.

The Thespian Board with the high school theatre department would like to share information about the Scotland trip that will be taking place in the summer of 2019; the high school theatre department was nominated to take a production to perform in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. This trip will be open to current seventh and eighth graders, who will be rising freshmen and sophomores at that time. A meeting will be held May 22nd at 6:00pm in the high school mini theatre discussing information about the trip.

MS Cheerleading  - New Albany Middle School cheerleading clinics and tryouts will be next week, May 14th-18th in the Middle School Cafeteria from 3:00-4:30.  You must have a physical and completed paperwork on Final Forms to participate. See Mrs. Hacker if you have any questions.

Boys Volleyball Camp - BOYS- here is an opportunity for you- Summer Volleyball Camp… A great opportunity for you to learn and play volleyball or begin learning a new sport.  Come to see Mrs. Remy for more details and a form in room 247.

Drill Team Tryouts - There will be a Drill Team tryouts meeting Friday, May 11 3:00 to 3:30 in the band room (I building) of the high school. Then tryouts are May 16th to 17th 5:30-7:30 in the band room then auditions are that Friday the 18th.

Spanish Taco Truck Field Trip - Attention Spanish Students Taco Truck Field Trip is almost here!  On Monday May 14 periods 2,4,8 and Tuesday May 15 periods 1,3,7 will be attending.  The Taco Truck experience is for Spanish students only and you may only attend during your assigned Spanish class time.   There are not middle school classes assigned to attend during lunch so report to the cafeteria as usual. All middle school students may stop by the Taco Trucks after 2:50 dismissal at the end of the day.

Congratulations to all students who participated in the talent show this past Friday.  It was an outstanding show!

Student Council will be selling Valentine’s Day Gram’s next week during Study Center. Nerd Ropes, Sweet Tarts, and Fun Dips, $1 each. Send them to your friends or yourself. Delivery will take place on Friday the 16th.  All proceeds will benefit the funds for the fallen police officers of Westerville.

Mathcounts had their regional competition this Saturday at Columbus State Community College, and students placed 7th for the day.

Blue Jupiter -  Blue Jupiter is the cutting edge of a cappella.  Soaring pop and Broadway leads. Tight harmonies. Unbelievable beatboxing. And most importantly, nothing else. No instruments. No DJ. No tracks. This NYC-based quartet is just 4 mouths and 4 mics. Real voices and non-stop energy. In a world where seemingly everything is fake, Blue Jupiter is literally, out of this world.  

Blue Jupiter will be at NAMS next Monday during choir classes and are also hosting a free evening concert for all on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 7:00 pm at the McCoy.

Kindness Week - 

Next week is kindness week. January 22nd to the 26th the NJHS will be asking for donations for families who do not have meals over the weekends, and in some cases do not have food at all.  There will be boxes in all of your core classes this will be a competition between 7th and 8th grade.

Monday January 22, bring in personal care items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap

Tuesday January 23, bring in apple juice, sugar free drink mixes or small water bottles

Wednesday January 24, bring in healthy snacks such as applesauce, granola bars, fruit cups or raisins

Thursday January 25, bring in foods to make a meal.  Peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, dry pasta and tomato sauce.

Tardies - 

Students, please remember that you must be in your classroom by the 8:00 bell to be considered on time to school.  If you enter after 8:00, you are considered tardy and must sign in at the office.  On your 6th tardy you will receive a lunch detention.  On your 7th tardy you will receive a Saturday school.  Tardies will be reset at the start of the 4th quarter.  Please see Mrs. LeBeau or Dr. Peterson with any questions.

MS FALL DANCE - 

The fall dance is tonight, Thursday, October 19th. Tickets for the dance will be sold today and tomorrow during lunch time. Tickets are $5.00 and will also be sold at the door.  Please remind your parents that drop off and pick up is in the McCoy loop, and parents should arrive to pick you up at 9:00.  Also remember to bring in a canned food item so you can participate in our friendly 7th and 8th grade competition.

MS Science Olympiad - A pre-tryout informational meeting for middle school Science Olympiad will be held Wednesday, September 13th at 7:00 pm in the MS cafeteria.  Any 6, 7, or 8th grade student and parents interested in an overview of Science Olympiad should plan to attend.  Students will be given the rules and tryout information at this time, and attendance is highly encouraged if you plan to tryout.  Please see Mrs. Jaster with any questions.

Congratulations to both our Boys and Girls Cross Country teams at the Granville Invitational on Saturday.  The boys team placed 1st overall.  The top 5 finishers for boys were:  Luke Weible, Will Benseler, Andy Dunn, Evan McClelland and Owen Weikert.  The Girls team finished 3rd place overall with 7th grader Emoni Saxton winning overall 1st place at the meet.  Other top finishers for the girls include Sammy Sika, Ellie Haffer, Clara Doyle and Steffie Thomas.  Come out tonight and support our girls volleyball and tennis teams!

New Albany MS will present “Legally Blonde Jr.” as the spring musical! To prepare for auditions, we are hosting an audition workshop. Audition Workshop - 

New Albany MS will present “Legally Blonde Jr.” as the  spring musical! As preparation for auditions, we are hosting an audition workshop. The workshop is open to any student grades 6-8 who would like to audition for the MS talent show(grades 7-8) or musical(grades 6-8). At the workshop we will be showing you all the do's and dont's in an audition. We’ll demonstrate proper audition etiquette, vocal audition tips and learn a sample of the choreography to featured in “Legally Blonde Jr.”. This workshop is free but it is first come, first serve. The girls’ tennis team on their 5-0 victory over Dublin Grizzell.  The 8th grade football team also defeated Gahanna West 24-0.  Congratulations to our NAMS athletes and coaches!

This is the final week for the Testing Attendance Donut Competition

Remember, if you know that you are going to be absent on your testing day for Part 1 or Part 2 of the Science or Social Studies test, make sure you make it up before the end of the week.  If all students in a class, complete part 1 and part 2 of the science/social studies test by the end of the week, your science or social studies class wins donuts on May 12.

Please join us this evening for our 7th annual Empty Bowls event in the middle school cafeteria between 5-7pm.  All proceeds from this event benefit the New Albany’s Village Coalition Against Hunger.

Track Team - 

The track team competed at Gahanna West on Monday night.  The boys won and the girls came up just short.  Some highlights from the meet include: Nui winning the boys 100m dash, Sebastian Ramirez winning the boys 400m dash, and Jack Caudill winning the boys shotput.  

On the girls side, Anvita Dandu placed 2nd in the girls 100 hurdles, Kiara Crumbley won the 400m dash, and Jayla Reese placed 2nd in the girls long jump.

The team will be back in action on Wednesday, April 12 at home.  The meet starts at 5 pm.

Have no fear, the competition for the donuts is not over yet.  We will run a test report after Friday to identify any student who has not completed English Language Arts Part 1 or Part 2.  If every student in your class has completed both English Language Arts parts by Friday, that counts for perfect attendance. So if you know that you are going to miss a day by Friday, please let your teacher know so that you can make it up before the end of day on Friday.

Congratulations OMUN - 

Some highlights include Portugal and Nicaragua passing their resolutions in Small Council, South Africa for advancing to General Assembly, and Nicaragua for earning a place in the Talent Semi-Finals.  Special honors go to Erin Cooper and Mackenzie Derflinger for being named Outstanding Leader and Nicaragua being named Outstanding Culture Nation.

Many of our eighth graders earned seats as 2018 OMUN officers.  Alex Palmer is General Assembly Vice-President , Erin Cooper and Mackenzie Derflinger are Council Presidents, and Sahiti Paluri, Kristian Janevski, Sarah Ereio, Sonali Shah, and Zach Yavitch are Council Vice Presidents.

CONGRATULATIONS - Congratulations to the Power of the Pen team for an excellent performance at regionals! Ava Kauffman came in 5th place, Brigitte Bell won a Best of Round, Anna Calcaterra won a Best of the Best from district, Avery LaJuennesse came in 15th and 7th grade won 1st in their division and 8th grade came in 2nd in theirs.

Congratulations to the 18 Middle School Choir students who participated in the Columbus Children's Choir Choral Festival on February 25 at Whitehall High school!   This year the choir was directed by composer,  and conductor, Rollo Dilworth. 

They participated in an all day choral festival at Whitehall high school , sponsored by the Columbus Children's Choir, the voice of the city.  The festival included 200 students from all over the state of Ohio. Our students represented New Albany in an incredible day of music, with beautiful singing, new friendships and a capstone performance.

Sports Update - The 8th grade girls basketball team finished off their regular season with a hard fought victory over a previously unbeaten Gahanna South team.  The girls concluded the regular season with a 14-1 record.

The 7th grade boys beat a previously unbeaten team last night to finish their regular season.  The 8th grade boys lost to Gahanna South.

MS Sports - 

The 8th grade boys basketball team had their third straight win!  The Eagles beat Reynoldsburg Waggoner 30-26. They were led by Brayden Elwer with 11 points and Owen Troutman with 8! 

The boys play their last home game of their middle school career vs Gahanna on Thursday. Come out and support them!

Sports Update - 

The New Albany 8th grade girls basketball team spotted Gahanna East a 14-1 lead before fighting back to win 41-32.  Great job ladies and good luck Thursday at home vs Gahanna West.

The 7th grade girls defeated Gahanna East last night to achieve their tenth win of the season. Congrats lady eagles, and good luck on Thursday at home against Gahanna. 

The New Albany 7th grade boys basketball team beat Gahanna East last night 44-40.  The 8th grade boys fell to Gahanna East last night at home.

Congratulations - 

Congratulations to the New Albany Middle School Boys and Girls swim teams who both won 1st place at the season-ending District Championship meet this weekend!  

The boys were led by double-individual gold medalists Tommy Morris in the 50 and 100 yard Freestyle, and Patrick Daly in the 100 IM and 50 Breaststroke.  They teamed with Cade Helms, Darden Spychalski, and Andrew Levine on first-place relay teams for the Eagles.

The girls won a very close meet over runner-up CSG, and it came down to the final relay to determine the outcome.   Kiara Crumbley, Marisa Downs, Evie Morris, and Calie Demers won both the 200 Medley and 200 Freestyle Relays which put the Eagles over the top and secure the victory.

Congratulations - 

Congratulations to the 8th grade Lady Eagles basketball team.  They fought hard and pulled out a 2 point victory Thursday against Pickerington Lakeview to push their record to 10-1.

The 7th grade girls had a huge win over Pickerington Lakeview last night, pulling away in the fourth quarter to win by double digits. Go lady eagles!

Good Luck Power of the Pen - Good luck to the Power of the Pen team when they compete in districts at Gahanna Middle School South tomorrow!

Today is a B block day

Congratulations - Congratulations Eagle Swim Teams who left the competition “in their wake” last night in their final home meet.  The Boys team was led by 8th graders Patrick Daly, Tommy Morris, and Andrew Levine.  Christopher Breuer and Sam Kovach also dropped significant time in achieving their personal best times.

The Girls team was also victorious, with Kiara Crumbley, Evie Morris, and Marisa Downs leading the way.  Natalie Duperre had a fantastic swim in the 50 Butterfly, while Alexis Curren had her lifetime best in the 50 Freestyle.   Good luck to both teams as they travel to district/sectionals this weekend in Delaware!

Wrestling Update - The Wrestling team is now 12-1 on the season and Saturday placed 4th out of 13 teams as a result of some solid individual performances.  Special congrats to the high place finishers:  1st -Jayden Fudge, 2nd  - Cameron Baker, 3rd place earned by Ethan Halpern, Collin Swincicki, Nico Candido, and Nui Dulan.  Many others competed well and secured some nice wins.

After beating Blendon by 1 point earlier in the season the 8th grade girls basketball team beat Blendon by 22 last night.  Congratulations and well done ladies.

The 7th grade girls beat Westerville Blendon for the second time this season last night by over 20 points. Way to go lady eagles!

The 7th grade boys beat Westerville Blendon last night by a score of 29-26.

The 8th grade boys played a great game against Blendon last night.   Coach Moore is proud of the grit and intensity our young men showed in battling back from a 11 point deficit to tie the game and send it into overtime.

Robotics Team Going to Regionals - Congratulations to the New Albany Middle School Robotics Team, the Digital Eagles Jr., on their amazing success at the Metro Regional Qualifier!

Though they had started almost two months late they were able to pull through and place in the top 6 out of all of the teams!

With their hard work and support from their families and the NAHS Robotics team they will be moving on to the Regional competition in Dublin on January 7th. Wish them good luck!

Band Concert - The band concert is tonight at 6:00 pm for 6th grade and 7:30 pm for 7th and 8th grade band.

Band students will have rehearsals at the McCoy today. Sixth graders all go during 2nd period, Seventh graders all go during 3rd period, and 8th graders all go during 4th period. Thank you for your Donation - Thank you NAMS for bringing in costumes to donate to children in the Dominican Republic!  We collected over 120 costumes. These costumes will bring many children joy as they celebrate their Independence Day. Congratulations to Mrs. Jaster’s study center for bringing in the most costumes. They will have their ice cream party soon!

Congratulations to Lucky Howard for winning the Mid-America Regional for Irish Dancing.  Lucky has now won all the three big American Majors and is ranked #1 in the world for his age group!  Way to go Lucky!

Congratulations to our  7th and 8th Grade Boys Basketball Teams.  Both teams beat Newark Wilson in their first game - 7th grade boys won with a score of 27 - 24 and 8th grade boys won with a score of 59 to 15.

Congratulations to our 7th grade Girls Basketball team. They won their first game handily last night, playing Newark Wilson. The final score was 56-3.

Bake Sale Today - Don't forget to come down for the bake sales today. The first sale is during 6th grade study center and the second is during 7th/8th grade study centers. All baked goods now cost $1.00 They will be selling in the Middle School foyer and on the 2-8 stage. All  proceeds are going to Pennies For Patients. Come by and grab a sweet treat for a great cause!"

New Albany High School Football Playoff - Feel free to join us and cheer on our New Albany High School football team as we send them off to Mansfield for the playoff game this Friday. Parents and students are welcome to join our community as they line up on Fodor Rd. at 3:45 p.m. this Friday. Go Eagles!

Honoring our staff - 

The New Albany Builders Club and Middle School would like to honor our staff veterans. Thank you to our orchestra teacher Mrs. Donahue and one of our Spanish teachers Mrs. Brausser, for serving in the military. We are very thankful for such astounding women, who fought bravely to save this country we call home. Our school would also like to honor and commemorate the millions of men and women that are veterans and those who are still fighting today. Now let's please take a moment of silence to reflect on those who have fought for us. Thank you veterans we appreciate your service!

Today is a B block day.

Mock Election - The results are in for the mock election held at New Albany Middle School yesterday. In one of the closest mock elections in recent memory, Donald Trump narrowly defeated Hillary Clinton to win the presidency with 273 electoral votes. Trump won the mock election despite the fact that Clinton won the popular vote; in all, 358 students voted for Clinton and 283 students voted for Trump. Rob Portman won the mock election for the U.S. Senate, receiving 385 votes to 254 votes for Ted Strickland. We also discovered that approximately 3 out of 5 New Albany Middle School students have a dog. Blue won out as students' favorite color.

I became a teacher because I have a skill that few have and I wanted to share that skill with others to help continue the tradition of visual art.  I remain an educator because I've never felt so fulfilled as when a struggling artist brings up a project that nails everything that I am looking for and shows imagination and skill!

Today is an A block day

Pennies for Poultry -  Thank you to all students for your support of our Pennies for Poultry Service Project.  Our grand total for online donations, checks, and cash was $3,313.30!  That is 240 Thanksgiving turkeys for local families in need!  Amazing work New Albany Middle School!!  

The winner for SLC 3 Donut party was Mrs. Hacker’s 1st period class. They collected $438.00 The winner for SLC 1 donut party was Mrs. Kelly Bean’s first period class.  They collected $102.00!  Thank you so much for your generosity!

My "AHA" moment was when I was teaching HS & I always dismiss my classes by saying "good job today." This one girl named Nikki turned to me with all sincerity and said, "no Mr. Morgan, you did a good job today." I never forgot that!

Village Coalition Against Hunger - Do you know that 35% of people that visit a food bank are children?  Also, one in six Ohioans do not have enough food? If you feel moved to do so, you can donate to the Village Coalition Against Hunger, the local New Albany food bank.  Bring in your donations tomorrow to your first period teacher.  The class that collects the most donations for the food bank wins a donut party!  There will be one winning class per SLC!  Thank you for your support!

Travel basketball.  For any 6th grade girl interested in travel basketball, tryouts will be on October 13th at 7:30 in the 2-5 gym and on October 20th at 6:30 in the 2-5 gym.  These times have changed from what was previously announced.  You are encouraged to attend both tryout opportunities.

MS Football. The 7th grade football team got back on the winning track, shutting out visiting Gahanna South Middle School 24-0. The Eagles enter their last week of the season with a home B game on Monday vs. Big Walnut, 5pm, and an away game vs. Big Walnut on Wednesday, October 12.

Student-Athlete of the Week.  Congratulations Aditya Akula for earning student-athlete of the week at NAMS.  Please congratulate Aditya for all his hard work, dedication and leadership to our MS Cross Country program as well as his commitment to academics.  Aditya currently has an A average across all of his classes, including two HS honors classes.  On the race course, he has taken .40 seconds off his time and has currently finished in the top 10 at each invitational.

High School Football.  Students - tonight is a home football game.  Mrs. LeBeau wants to remind you that Board Policy is very clear on middle school attendance at high school games.  The Board of Education encourages students to attend games.  However, Board Policy 5855 states that elementary and middle school students must be accompanied by a parent or adult chaperone when they arrive at the event and throughout the event. Any unaccompanied elementary or middle school student will not be allowed to attend the event.

8th Grade Volleyball.  8th Grade Volleyball had a challenging match on Wednesday night that culminated in a 2-0 shutout of Westerville Heritage.  Awesome effort and congratulations, Lady Eagles!

Lunch Period.  7th and 8th graders, please exit the building by the side doors near the music wing for lunch so that sixth graders can enter the building during that transition through the center doors.  You did a great job with that yesterday and we want that to continue.
