About Michael Sawyers

 

Superintendent

Michael Sawyers began as Superintendent of New Albany-Plain Local Schools on August 1, 2016. Previously, Sawyers served the district as its Chief of Operations and Strategic Development for three years.  Sawyers received the New Albany Chamber of Commerce Delta Award for Outstanding Business Leader in recognition of his excellent stewardship of the school district.

Sawyers’ dedication to the community extends beyond the New Albany-Plain Local Schools campus as demonstrated by his involvement in many community and area organizations. He currently serves as an ex-officio member of the New Albany Chamber of Commerce and New Albany Community Foundation Board of Directors as well as serving on the Concord Counseling and Ohio School Plan Board of Directors.  Sawyers actively participates in the State Superintendent Advisory committee at the Ohio Department of Education and is involved with the New Albany Rotary. He is President of the Central Ohio Superintendents’ Association. Through his involvement with these organizations, Sawyers actively represents and advocates for the best interest of the school district and for student achievement, student growth, and student well-being.  

Sawyers brings over 25 years of experience advocating for public education at the local, state, and national level.  Sawyers served as a teacher, athletic director, assistant principal, deputy principal, director of curriculum and assessment, director of human resources, and/or superintendent in three Ohio school districts.  At the state and national level, Sawyers served as an Assistant Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent, and Acting State Superintendent of Public Instruction at the Ohio Department of Education before joining the district.

Sawyers is a graduate of the Ohio School Leadership Academy, has been an instructor with the Ohio Principal’s Leadership Academy, actively presents for the Buckeye Association of School Administrators, and has completed post ­graduate coursework in Educational Administration and Leadership. He has a Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Science degree in education, both from the University of Akron.

Sawyers and his wife, Paula, an Assistant Prosecutor in Licking County have three young adult children, Ben, Rose, and Noah.
