Ms. Slanec

I embarked on my incredible journey in teaching 14 years ago, and have been greatly inspired by the unique and creative individual young people whom I have had the privilege of serving as their teacher. I received my Bachelor of Science in Education from Baldwin-Wallace College in 2002, my Master of Arts in Education in drama, language arts, literature, and reading from The Ohio State University in 2009, and my Gifted Intervention Specialist Endorsement from The University of Cincinnati in 2010.

I spent the first 12 years in my career as a 5th and 6th grade language arts and social studies classroom teacher in Reynoldsburg City School’s accelerated classes and gifted and talented middle school 5-8 academy, “Gateway”. In 2015 I accepted a new position that I currently hold here in New Albany as a gifted intervention specialist for 4th and 5th grade language arts classes. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to reach more students in my role as a GIS!

I am dedicated to creating a connected community of learners by facilitating inquiry based learning in literature, creative problem solving, higher level critical thinking, as well as guiding our gifted and talented students to develop positive self-awareness and image through engaging social/emotional lessons. One of my most treasured teaching experiences was being chosen as a selected educator for the 2012--2015 cohort of the Ohio State University’s partnership with the United Kingdom’s Royal Shakespeare Company, Stand Up for Shakespeare program, an intensive 3 year training program in dramatic inquiry at the Ohio State University that also included a 10 day workshop in the United Kingdom (summer 2013). I continue to take professional development workshops through OSU in this program, and have to date taught extensive, in depth units on 7 of Shakespeare’s plays that culminated in the students seeing a live performance of each play produced by The Ohio State University of theater as well as the United Kingdom’s US Royal Shakespeare tours. I love witnessing my students light up with excitement as they connect to the complex themes and language in Shakespeare’s work!

When I am not teaching I enjoy spending time with my husband and our two children, Ella- 7 years, and Jasper- 3 years. We value our precious family time and love to bike ride, hike, and travel! I am very much looking forward to working with my new 4th and 5th grade students in language arts this year and helping them grow to their full potential!
