William "Bill" Toney, Class of 1954 Inducted into the NAHS Hall of Fame!
Bill Toney

William "Bill" Toney is a true legend in New Albany athletics, making a lasting impact across multiple sports during his high school career. A dedicated three-sport athlete, Bill's contributions to football, track, and basketball from 1951 to 1954 remain a testament to his exceptional talent and hard work.

On the football field, Bill was a standout defensive end, earning honorable mention and serving as co-captain. His commitment was evident as he lettered all four years while navigating the challenges of early equipment, from spike cleats to leather helmets. His resilience in the face of a severe concussion—one that led to the introduction of fiberglass helmets—demonstrates his dedication to the sport and his pioneering role in improving player safety.

In track, Bill's prowess was equally impressive. Recruited as an 8th grader, he lettered all five years, showcasing his versatility in both the 400 and 800 meter dashes (then the 440 and 880 yard dashes). Bill's remarkable performance earned him top honors, including second place in the county for the 800 meter dash his senior year and first place in high jump for three consecutive years—Sophomore, Junior, and Senior.

Bill's achievements extended to the basketball court, where he also lettered all four years.

Reflecting on his experiences, Bill Toney expresses pride in the progress of New Albany's athletic programs and is honored to have played a role in their evolution. His legacy as a trailblazer continues to inspire future generations, and we extend our deepest gratitude to Bill for his remarkable contributions to New Albany athletics.
