From September 1–11, our bus drivers will be working with all students in grades Kindergarten through 3rd grade on important school bus safety information. This annual instruction is required by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce under Ohio Administrative Code 3301-83-09 and Ohio Revised Code 3327.16.

Our drivers will review and practice age-appropriate safety skills in four important areas:

At the Bus Stop

• Arrive at the bus stop 5 minutes early.
• Follow the bus driver’s signals and directions.
• Practice safe and respectful behavior while waiting.
• Wait at least 10 feet from the edge of the roadway.
• Enter and exit the bus safely, using the handrails and keeping backpacks secure.
• Remember: The horn means DANGER! Look for the danger and/or look at the driver.

Inside the Bus

• Walk quickly and safely to your seat.
• Sit properly, back-to-back and seat-to-seat, with feet on the floor when able.
• Keep calm bodies in our seats.
• Follow classroom conduct expectations.
• Use a quiet voice (Level 1 or 2).
• Obey the bus driver.
• Keep aisles and emergency exits clear of people and belongings.
• Do not eat or drink on the bus.
• Keep your head, hands, and feet inside the bus.
• Identify the emergency exits.

The Danger Zone

• The danger zone is the 10-foot area around the bus.
• Ten feet is about four giant steps.
• If something is dropped in the danger zone, leave it alone and tell the driver.
• Remember: We can get another toy. We cannot make another you.
• If you cannot see the driver, the driver cannot see you.

Emergency Evacuation

• During an evacuation, our voice level is zero.
• Listen carefully for instructions from the driver and other helpers.
• Leave all belongings, including backpacks, on the bus.
• Sit on the edge of the exit and jump with assistance when directed.
• Walk to a safe location at least 100 feet away from the bus.
• Stay calm and wait for further instructions.
