NAPLS E-Bikes & Scooter Update

The City of New Albany has approved new legislation to enhance safety for everyone who lives, works, and learns in our community. These updates include new requirements for riders of e-bikes and e-scooters that families should review together.

Key Highlights of the New Rules:

✅ Helmets required for riders under 18

✅ Helmets required for regular bike riders under 18

✅ Speed limit of 10 mph on shared-use paths (electric motors are not allowed on sidewalks)

✅ Lights and reflectors required when riding at night

✅ Class 3 e-bike riders must be at least 16 years old, wear a helmet, and ride on the road

✅ Parents may be cited if their child violates the rules

Please note: E-dirt bikes are not street legal and are not permitted on shared-use paths, sidewalks, school district property or city streets.

Based on this new legislation from the city, the district will restrict the use of all motors on all school campus sidewalks and require helmets for all students under the age of 18.

Impact on our School Campus:

✅ Helmets required for riders under 18

✅ Helmets required for regular bike riders under 18

✅ No motors on sidewalks (all campus) - must be human power only

✅ School consequences for e-bike/e-scooter violations on campus

We encourage all families to review these updates and talk with their child(ren) about how to stay safe and responsible while riding.
