"Homecoming" A Celebration for Black History Month
Black History Month 2026

New Albany–Plain Local Schools Black History Month Celebration is a student-driven performance that honors the rich legacy, excellence, and cultural impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This year’s celebration blends powerful storytelling, music, and movement to highlight how HBCUs have shaped generations of leaders, artists, and change-makers.

Featuring musical tributes inspired by Beyoncé and selections from the Broadway musical The Wiz, the performance connects tradition with modern influence, celebrating Black culture across generations. Approximately 70 students involved in every aspect of the production—on stage and behind the scenes—this event reflects our district’s commitment to student voice, creativity, and cultural understanding.

Purpose & Intent:
The purpose of this celebration is to educate, inspire, and unite our school community by recognizing the historical and ongoing contributions of Black Americans through the lens of HBCU culture and artistic expression. Through a student-produced, student-led experience, the program fosters pride, belonging, and a deeper appreciation for the impact of Black history on our shared future.

“Homecoming" is in alignment with the district’s R-Factor (E+R=O) system which attaches the importance of being focused and thoughtfully engaged, as well as acting with purpose and pride in order to have positive outcomes, and supporting each other by celebrating the timeless values of equality and acceptance while building an inclusive campus culture.

We invite the community to a special preview performance on Thursday, February 26 at 7:00 PM in the McCoy Center for the Arts. Admission is FREE. The program will again be presented at grade-level assemblies on Friday, February 27 for students in grades 6-12.
