Mr. Emery’s twenty-seven year career began with the Dublin City Schools in 1992, where he was a teacher for five years. His first principalship was at Wyandot Elementary in 1997, where he was recognized with the Golden Shamrock Award in 1999 for his contributions to the Dublin school district.
In 2000, Mr. Emery was selected as the principal of Granville Elementary School, a K-5 school with 850 students. While at Granville Elementary he planned for the opening of Granville Intermediate School, and he became the school’s first principal when it opened for grades four to six in 2002. During Mr. Emery’s tenure at Granville Intermediate, the school was recognized as a Battelle For Kids SOAR Award winner, given to the top schools in Ohio for both student achievement and academic growth. Mr. Emery became Director of Educational Operations for the Granville Schools in 2008, which included the responsibilities of K-12 curriculum, communications, and human resources.
He returned to building administration as a principal with the Gahanna Jefferson Public Schools, where his school earned the High Progress School of Honor Award from the Ohio Department of Education, a recognition given to schools with significant numbers of economically disadvantaged students who demonstrate rates of academic growth in the top 10 percent of Ohio. Mr. Emery joined the administrative team of New Albany-Plain Local Schools in 2013 as an elementary principal and became the Director of Elementary Education in 2016.
After attending the Worthington Schools for his K-12 education, Mr. Emery graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1991 and completed his work for his masters degree (1995), principal license (1997), and superintendent license (2000) at The Ohio State University. He resides in Granville with his wife of 26 years, Wendy. They have three children: Sarah, a graduate of Miami University; William, a graduate of Georgetown University; and Grace, an intermediate student. His community service roles have included serving as President of the Granville Public Library Board of Trustees, President of the Granville Community Foundation, and Treasurer for the Rotary Club of Granville.
Dr. Shirley Hamilton
Director of Secondary Education
Dr. Hamilton began serving the New Albany-Plain Local School District as the Director of Secondary Education in July 2016. Dr. Hamilton works directly with New Albany High and Middle Schools to direct curriculum and assessment for the two buildings.
Her focus is to influence directly and indirectly through the secondary administration, the accomplishment of the district’s educational goals through the development, planning, and implementation of curriculum, professional development, school improvement initiatives, administration evaluation and the overall secondary education program.
Dr. Hamilton brings to the district a wealth of experience in education, serving in many different roles in various school districts. Prior to joining the New Albany-Plain Local School District, she served most recently as the Director of Special Education at Worthington City Schools. She also served Worthington as the Director of Pupil Services, and the Director of both Elementary and Secondary Education. Dr. Hamilton served as an Assistant Superintendent at Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools for 13 years, and has also been a high school principal, assistant principal, and teacher in Columbus City Schools.
NAHS Principal Dwight Carter worked directly with Dr. Hamilton in the Gahanna-Jefferson school district. Dr. Hamilton is a resident of our district and parent of a 4th grade student.
Dr. Hamilton holds degrees from The Ohio State University including a Ph.D. in Teacher Education, Educational Administration and Curriculum, a Master of Arts in Social Studies Education and a Bachelor of Science in Comprehensive Social Studies Education.
