Degrees and Certifications:
Brian Coon graduated from Capital University in Columbus and began his instrumental music teaching career in 1991 in the Teays Valley Local Schools District. After 9 years at Teays Valley, he spent 8 years at home being "Mr. Mom" for his two daughters until and was hired at New Albany in 2008. Since returning to classroom duties, he has received a Master of Arts in Teaching from Kaplan University and State of Ohio Master Teacher certification. Since 2008, Mr. Coon has been a Middle School Band Director, and a High School Band Assistant Director. He has also taught elementary music classes, High School Jazz Band, Music Survey, Life Skills, and assisted with 8th grade choir. In 2017, Mr. Coon restarted the Middle School Jazz Band, which had been cut after a levy failure.
Mr. Coon has been an active performer locally and regionally for more than 30 years. He has performed with many national acts and has been a member of several jazz, rock, country, Jewish, Salsa bands. He occasionally plays saxophone for Columbus Symphony Orchestra Pops concerts, and in 2016, he was a featured saxophone soloist in a "Pixar in Concert" program with the CSO. Currently, Mr. Coon is a member of The Conspiracy Band and The Kevin Patrick Sweeney Band.
A frequent phrase heard in Mr. Coon's classroom is "let's make our best better", borrowed from a 4H slogan, and "It's fun to be good!" There is so much more to Band class than learning notes on an instrument. A few proud teaching moments include writing/producing original hip-hop recordings in 4th Grade music classes with hip hop artist Joe Dawg Brother, hosting Dr. Scott Jones from the OSU School of Music, hosting composer James Swearingen, performing a live movie soundtrack for "The Great Locomotive Chase" with the Middle School Band, sending dozens of students to regional Honor Bands and camps, and collaborating with students who have arranged and/or written compositions for band classes.
Mr. Coon has been a 4H advisor for the K9 Wonderdogs club, and has held membership in the American Federation of Musicians, the Ohio Music Educators' Association, the National Association for Music Education, and in 2011, became an artist endorser for Antigua Winds Saxophones. Mr. Coon lives in Gahanna with his family and two rescue dogs. Cleo heels beautifully!
