Mr. Coon

Brian Coon graduated from Capital University in Columbus and began a teaching career in 1991 in the Teays Valley Local Schools District. After nine years at Teays Valley, he spent eight years at home being "Mr. Mom" for his two daughters until being hired to teach at New Albany in 2008. Since returning to classroom duties, he has received a Master of Arts in Teaching from Kaplan University and State of Ohio Master Teacher certification. Since 2008, Mr. Coon has been a Middle School Band Director, and a HS Band Assistant Director. He has also taught elementary music classes, High School Jazz Band, Music Survey, Life Skills, and assisted with 8th grade choir. In 2017, Mr. Coon restarted the Middle School Jazz Band, which had been cut after a levy failure.

Mr. Coon has also been an active performer locally and regionally for more than 25 years. Mr. Coon has performed with many national acts, orchestras, concert bands, and played as a member of several jazz, rock, country, Jewish, and salsa bands. Currently, Mr. Coon is a member of The Conspiracy Band and The Kevin Patrick Sweeney Band and occasionally plays pops concerts with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. In 2016, he was a featured saxophone soloist in a "Pixar in Concert" program with the CSO. Mr. Coon also was a 4H adviser for the "K-9 Wonder Dogs" club for many years when his daughters were members. Mr. Coon lives in Gahanna with his family and three rescue dogs that often heel beautifully.

Mr. Coon is a member of the American Federation of Musicians, the Ohio Music Educators' Association, the National Association for Music Education, NEA, OEA, and in 2011, Mr. Coon became an artist endorser for Antigua Winds Saxophones. A few proud teaching moments include writing/producing original hip-hop recordings in 4th Grade music classes with hip hop artist Joe Dawg Brother, hosting Dr. Scott Jones from the OSU School of Music, hosting composer James Swearingen, performing a live movie soundtrack for "The Great Locomotive Chase" with the Middle School Band, sending dozens of students to regional Honor Bands and camps, and collaborating with students who have arranged and/or written compositions for the band class.
