DAILY ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Any students in traveling to China next March should come to a parent meeting this Thursday at 6:00 in the Jefferson room. If you are unable to attend, please see Mrs. Sage for more information about the trip to China.

 

  • All students who have registered for AP Physics or AP Physics Blended need to email Mr. Morris at morris.@napls.us sometime before the end of the school year to receive instructions for the summer assignment.  Please include the title AP Physics in the subject line and include in your email the level of Math you have just completed this year.  Again All students registered for AP Physics or AP Physics Blended must email Mr. Morris by the end of the school year.

 

  • Students still needing to pick up their summer assignment for AP Psychology should see Mr. Mathews in room B100.
  • All students interested in participating in the Ohio Model United Nations for next year need to attend a meeting tomorrow at 2:30 in Room J109. We will discuss what is expected of groups in terms of planning over the summer and provide information about next year’s conference. If you have any questions, please see Mr. Sycher in Room J109 as soon as possible. Thank you!

NAHS Students Honored for Aspirations in Computing, featured in the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation Report

On Saturday, May 11, 2013, David Herman NAHS and Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools, AP Computer Science and Robotics teacher served as emcee for the annual Aspirations in Computing Awards Ceremony for 25 high school girls from across Ohio at TechColumbus.

Mr. Herman is a volunteer with the Ohio Affiliate of the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT).   “Hosting this event for these amazing young women is a tremendous honor, one which I shall not soon forget,” said Mr. David Herman.

Three New Albany High School students were among the honorees

  • Lauryn Woodyard, 2013 National Award plus Ohio Affiliate Award
  • Ama Koranteng, 2013 National Award Runner-Up plus Ohio Affiliate Award
  • Ashmi Patel, 2013 National Award Runner-Up plus Ohio Affiliate Award

 

These students were 3/4′s of the team for the New Albany High School Robotics 2 pilot. They also presented at the eTech 2013 Ohio Educational Technology Conference.  Koranteng and Patel led Female Innovators of New Albany (FIONA) this year, and presented to the Board of Education May 20th on the Grant-funded scaled-up version for 2013-2014 in partnership with the OSU Department of Computer Science & Engineering.  Microsoft is donating curriculum and new Surface Tablet computers in support of the project.

 

Based on Mr. Herman’s multi-year involvement, New Albany – Plain Local Schools is considered a sponsor of the annual Aspirations in Computing Awards, alongside Microsoft, Google, and the Motorola Solutions Foundation, each of which contributes monetary support of NCWIT’s Aspirations in Computing Awards program.

 

During his closing, Mr. Herman provided the following insight for all the honorees, “Consider yourself a lens.  Gather information, ideas, skills.  Magnify and focus what you’ve learned.  Then pass it on as a mentor for younger girls.  Help shape the next generation.  That is how you change the world.”

 

Background regarding the Aspirations in Computing Awards Program:

  • The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing honors young women at the high-school level for their computing-related achievements and interests. Awardees are selected for their computing and IT aptitude, leadership ability, academic history, and plans for post-secondary education. The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing offers both a national and local “affiliate” competitions to generate support and visibility for women’s participation in communities nationwide.
  • Aspirations in Computing is a talent development pipeline initiative of the National Center for Women & IT (NCWIT) designed to increase women’s meaningful participation in computing careers by providing encouragement, visibility, community, leadership opportunities, scholarships, and internships to high potential technically inclined young women. Aspirations in Computing is the only national level talent development program for young women in computing and information technology.

  • Attention all students taking AP Microeconomics next year: There will be a meeting on Wednesday May 22 in room K104 during House. Attend during your normal House period. The summer assignment and other important information will be discussed at this time. See Mrs. Milligan with any questions.

 

  •  If you are taking a KAP class next year you must turn in your completed application to your KAP instructor by May 24!!
  • Do you have piles of unwanted clutter form spring cleaning?  If so, come ou tit he Middle School bus loop between 1pm and 4pm on Sunday, May 19th.  The Habitat for Humanity – ReStore Donation Drive will accept gently used home goods.  You don’t even have to leave your car.

 

  • Attention Juniors! If you signed up for Government, Politics, and Economics (GPE), please go to the gym during your House period on Tuesday, 5/21. You will have the opportunity to choose the course material delivery method that works best for you – flipped or traditional. We will explain each. You do not need to come to the meeting if you signed up for blended Government or AP Government.

  • The annual Founders Day festival will take place Saturday, and volunteers are needed to help with the festival, parade, and art show. Anyone interested in volunteering can get more information from Mrs. Sage in E 139.

 

  • Attention all school year personal fitness students. Presentations must be completed by today. Please contact Mr.Talpas to set up your time to present.

 

  • Go to relayforlife.org and sign up for New Albany Plain Local Schools and pledge to raise money for the event to end cancer, and be entered into a raffle drawing for a $25 Rusty Bucket gift card.  Relay for Life is a walk Relay and will take place on June 7th and 8th.
  • The deadline has been extended for all students who are interested in being a House Tutor or a House Class Officer! Please turn in your application forms to your House Dean by this Friday.

 

  • Graduating National Honor Society Members:  Honor Collars for graduation will be available for you to pick up in Mr. Dawson’s room (L200) starting on Thursday May 23rd through Wednesday May 29th so that you have them before graduation practice on May 30th.

 

  • National Honor Society Eagle-Thon Dance 2013 will be tonight from 7-10.  Steak Escape and Cap City Diner will be selling food in the MS gym.  Tickets will be on sale at lunch and are $10 and all proceeds will go to Children’s Hospital.
