** Due to the school cancellation on March 6 – the NAPLS Learning Community will hold the Rally on Wednesday – March 20, 2013..

Spread the Word to End the Word: New Albany students and staff pledge and support the elimination of the derogatory use of the word “retarded” from everyday speech, and promote the acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities.

The national Spread the Word to End the Word campaign, created by youth, is intended to engage schools, organizations, and communities to rally and pledge their support, and to promote the inclusion and acceptance of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The official day of awareness will be held Wednesday, March 6th. Led by the Special Education Department, New Albany students will hold a rally at the McCoy Center for the Arts to educate their community, and inspire them to spread the word to end the word. The rally will highlight the talents of all students, including musical performances, personal testimonies, video presentations, role-play exercises, and a Spread the Word art gallery featuring student artwork. Additionally, K-12 students and staff will be donned in lime green, signing pledges to remove the “r” word from their everyday speech.

New Albany High School Students will view the Public Service Announcement video created by the committee in their House Periods.
Though not participating in the full rally activities – the K-5 have also been very involved in the campaign. Teachers are sharing spread the word talking points and videos with students and staff. Additionally, students have been participating in a physical disability awareness event in wellness under the leadership of Barry Ward. This includes wheelchairs, standers, orthotics, and a video presentation.

K-5 students and staff will also be wearing their lime green and signing pledges to end the r-word. Their art will also be featured in the STW art gallery at the McCoy center on March 6th.
