NAPLS “Battle of the Books” Team Earns Second Place

March 5, 2013

Congratulations to our students who participated in this year’s Battle of the Books Competition.

The Battle of the Books Seminar began in September this past year with 94 students participating. All students attempted to read the first six books out of 12 total books required for the competition.  In early January, 24 students qualified as members of three main teams and alternates.   The teams read and studied as many of the remaining books as possible, wrote practice questions and coached each other throughout January and February.  The competition is like a quiz-bowl where student buzz in to answer questions about each of the books.  The three highest-scoring teams compete in the final Championship Round.

Our New Albany Team C achieved 2nd place in the competition among 18 teams from across central Ohio. Participating schools included: Bexley City Schools, Canal Winchester Local Schools, Columbus City Schools, Grandview Heights City Schools, Groveport Madison Local Schools, Hamilton Local Schools, Olentangy Local Schools, St. Brigid of Kildare, and New Albany-Plain Local Schools.

The culminating competition is designed to celebrate students’ hard work, their book and character discussions, and team collaborations as they met several times a week and during lunch/recess in this seminar.  Our students performed well under pressure and on stage, even though this year’s competition was tough.  They also enjoyed lunch with all of the students from other schools before returning to classes for the afternoon.  All 24 students deserve congratulations for a job well done as excellent representatives for our school.
