Each year, the Ohio Civil Rights Commission sponsors an annual statewide Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Art, Writing & Multimedia Contest. The purpose of this contest is to encourage students to reflect upon Dr. King’s life and the impact of his work in the Civil Rights Movement and in present day America. Contestants were required to submit entries reflecting on the peaceful and non-violent tactics that were discussed throughout Dr. King’s Nobel Lecture, “The Quest for Peace and Justice,” and served as the foundation of his leadership in the Civil Rights Movement. Students were also asked to incorporate examples from their lives and experiences that describe what they can do or what they have done in their own neighborhoods and communities in order to contribute to a more peaceful and nonviolent world.
New Albany High School freshman Eli Enin-Kattah received information about the contest teacher Jacqui Loughry.
“Eli just took the ball and ran with it,” said Ms. Loughry. “As a result, Eli won the Ninth Grade Writing Award for the contest!”
Eli has been invited to an award recognition ceremony on February 23, where she will be presented with an award for her work. Congratulations, Eli!
