Letter from the Superintendent

June 10, 2012

Dear Parents, Staff and Community Members,

Each school year, you entrust us with the awesome responsibility of educating your children. It’s a charge that we take seriously. We all recognize that a vibrant, challenging, and successful school district is critical to our children’s future and our shared success.

Over the past couple of years, we engaged the community in the development of a strategic plan for the district and implementation of the plan is underway.  We have and will continue to benchmark our performance against schools from other areas of the state, our country and around the world. And we have worked on a master plan for future development of our district’s unique campus.

We are now at an important point in our school’s history, where all of the planning, strategy and the work accomplished to date is coming together, and we need you to be involved.

This Monday, June 11, the school board will hold a special working session to focus on three important items:

1)   EDUCATIONAL INNOVATION: I will be sharing a presentation about all the educational innovation underway in our district, our district vision and the future of educational innovation.

2)   SCHOOL FACILITIES: Earlier this year I convened an advisory committee to engage in significant research on the current and future need for educational space in our district. The committee will share a proposal about the construction of new educational space to meet growing enrollment.  (This is a concept to add capacity to our campus with a construction budget – not about a specific building and not about certain grades.)

3)   DISTRICT FINANCES: In response to our educational goals and facilities needs, the board will discuss a variety of possibilities for levy size and timing.

Each of these issues requires thoughtful consideration and input from the community. The decisions made about our educational pursuits, facilities, and finances will determine the future of this district and community for years to come. We are asking you to engage in the conversation.

We understand that not everyone in the community will be able to attend the meeting.  We plan to videotape the meeting and will post it on our web site. Additionally, the board will be conducting regular meetings to continue an open dialogue regarding the district’s future needs and we are always available by email or phone.  Also, in an effort to hear from community members, the Board is currently conducting a community survey by phone. The Board will hold another work session on Monday, June 18 to hear the results of the survey and engage the community in further dialogue.  We invite you to consider attending this session.

Here are the details for the meeting tomorrow night:
