The New Albany High School Drama Department is proud to present Legally Blonde: The Musical as its opening show for the 2012 – 2013 season. Legally Blonde: The Musical – with a book by Heather Hach and lyrics and music by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin – is based on the novel and the hit 2001 film starring Reese Witherspoon. It tells the story of Elle Woods, a blonde sorority girl who enrolls at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner. Along the way, she discovers the law has the power to change people’s lives for the better and takes it upon herself to defend exercise queen Brooke Wyndham in a murder trial. Jam-packed with vibrant dance numbers and catchy songs, this bright, bubbly, family-friendly musical teaches important life lessons about accepting people’s differences, believing in oneself and others, and persevering through all of life’s ups-and-downs.
Legally Blonde: The Musical received ten Drama Desk Award nominations and seven Tony Award nominations in its original run on Broadway. In London’s West End, the musical was nominated for five Laurence Olivier Awards and won three of them, including the Best New Musical award.
This production will be one of the most ambitious ever for the drama department. In total, over 52 students will be involved in the cast with the addition of about 40 students involved in supporting areas of set design, musical arrangement and costume creation. An additional feature, not to be missed, is the inclusion of two dogs as members of the cast
The directors – Mr. Elliott Lemberg (Director), Mr. Darren Falk (Pit Orchestra Director), Ms. Karrie Horton (Music Director), Ms. Jessica Nettler (Technical Director), and Ms. Melissa Schill (Managing Director) – are excited to welcome back choreographers Ms. Chrissy Danflous and Ms. Nikki Tuller of Broadway Bound Dance Centre. Legally Blonde: The Musical is their third collaboration with the NAHS Drama Department; they previously choreographed Hairspray in 2010 and Chicago in 2011. Also returning is guest lighting designer Mr. Jon Gillie; his past designs for the NAHS Drama Department include Hairspray, Noises Off, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Chicago, Our Town, and Almost, Maine. Also returning are star costumers Barbara Leeman and Billy Antil to design and construct all those pink outfits.
Tickets are $12 general admission and $7 for staff/senior citizens/students. We hope to see you at the Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday November 15th, Friday November 16th, and Saturday November 17th at 7:30 P.M., and Sunday November 18th at 2:30 P.M., for this entertaining spectacle!
