The Board of Education recognized New Albany High School students for their achievement in being named a National Merit Scholar at the Board Meeting on October 28, 2013.
National Merit – Commended
More than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT® receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Commended Students are named on the basis of a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit® Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.

National Merit – Semifinalists
About 16,000 students, or approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers, are notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists. To ensure that academically talented young people from all parts of the United States are included in this talent pool, Semifinalists are designated on a state representational basis. They are the highest scoring entrants in each state.

National Achievement Scholar – Outstanding Participants
Each year, approximately 3,100 outstanding National Achievement® Program participants are brought to the attention of about 1,500 four-year colleges and universities in the United States. In late September, a roster of these students’ names, high schools, and tentative college majors is sent to higher education admission officials. At the same time, principals are notified of their students who are being referred to colleges and receive a certificate for presentation to each student in recognition of his or her standing in the program.

National Achievement Scholars – Semifinalists
About 1,600 high-scoring participants in each year’s National Achievement® Scholarship Program are designated Semifinalists. To ensure that academically talented African American students throughout the nation are included in the pool, Semifinalists are named on a regional representation basis. Semifinalists are the highest-scoring program participants in the states that constitute each region. Application materials are sent to Semifinalists through their high schools.
