The New Albany – Plain Local Board of Education honored New Albany students for their participation and performance as Special Olympians at the school board meeting on August 27, 2012.
The students honored include – Bethany Stineman (track, basketball and bowling), Matthew Thomas (track, basketball, swimming, golf & bowling), Gabe Ratliff (track and basketball), Grant Parrish (track, basketball & bowling), Madeline Ford (track & swimming) and Anthony Carioti (Track, Basketball & swimming.)
The Board of Education and Athletic Department also presented its first Varsity Letter to New Albany High School Senior Gabe Ratliff for his performance in Track and Basketball. Ratliff earned a gold medal in the 100-meter dash and a silver medal in the mini-javelin throw last summer during the 2012 Special Olympics state track meet.
The New Albany Plain Local School Community is proud of our Special Olympians. The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
In Ohio, sports offered include; Alpine Skiing, Aquatics, Athletics, Basketball, Bocce, Bowling, Cycling, Equestrian, Figure Skating, Golf, Gymnastics, Nordic Skiing, Power lifting, Roller-skating, Soccer, Softball, Speed Skating, Tennis and Volleyball.
