What happens at Kindergarten Assessment Screening in August?

Kindergarten assessment screening will be located at the New Albany Elementary K-1, 5101 Swickard Woods Blvd, New Albany on August 5th & 6th.  After the initial check-in your child will begin the Assessment with a staff member which consists of:

  • Upper and lowercase letter identification
  • Letter sounds
  • Hearing and producing rhyme
  • Number identification to 20
  • Answering simple questions

Some skills that would be beneficial for your child to have upon entering Kindergarten are to begin to recognize their name in print, to identify letters and letter sounds, and to recognize numbers.  The process will take approximately 15-20 minutes.  The assessments are not used to identify whether a child should or should not attend kindergarten.  It is not a pass/fail screening process.  The screenings are required by state law and are administered by school personnel.

How will I I know if my child will be in the morning or afternoon kindergarten?

Your residence will determine if your child is placed in AM or PM.  The Transportation Department determines the AM/PM areas based on kindergarten enrollment.  Your child’s AM or PM assignment will be identified on the mailing label of your enrollment packet sent out in mid-March.

Kindergarten Curriculum Resources, Materials, and Activities

A successful child needs a team of supporting and caring individuals both at home and at school. This information is intended to introduce skills that will be continued in the kindergarten classroom. You can click on the following link to the view the kindergarten curriculum for Math, Science, Social Studies and Language Arts. Also contained within these pages is a copy of the Learner’s Profile (report card), rubrics and classroom portals to introduce some early readiness skills.  These optional activities are for your discretionary use.  They are not required but may be useful for preparing your child for a very exciting year of kindergarten!

Some supplies you may consider keeping on hand for these and other readiness activities you may do at home with your child include:  crayons, markers, children’s scissors, glue and/or glue sticks, pencils, a variety of paper types your child can use for writing, coloring, cutting, and gluing.  Books, puzzles, and board games are also very important.  These supplies are needed when completing the learning activities sent home by the classroom teacher throughout the school year for your child to practice their skills.
